Understanding Hamon Types and the Science Behind Japan’s Temper Line

The hamon — the temper line that marks the boundary between a Japanese blade’s hardened edge steel and its softer spine — is the most visually and technically distinctive feature of traditional nihonto. No two hamon are identical. Learning to read them is both a scientific and an aesthetic exercise.

What Creates the Hamon

Hamon formation begins with tsuchioki — the application of a clay mixture to the blade before the final quench. The smith applies clay in a thicker layer to the spine and thinner (or none) at the edge. When the blade is heated and quenched in water, the clay-covered spine cools slowly, resulting in softer pearlite and ferrite microstructure. The exposed edge cools rapidly, converting to hard martensite. The boundary between these two cooling regimes, revealed by polishing and etching, is the hamon.

Major Hamon Patterns

Suguha (straight): A straight, even hamon running parallel to the edge. The simplest form, but demanding in execution — any irregularity is immediately obvious. Associated with Yamato tradition smiths and the austere aesthetic of early nihonto.

Notare (undulating): Long, smooth waves. A signature of the Bizen tradition and many Shinto-period works. The undulation can be tight and regular or broad and expressive depending on the smith’s interpretation.

Gunome (repeating half-circles): A pattern of regular rounded points. Gunome in various forms appears across multiple traditions and periods. Tight, regular gunome is Mino tradition; larger, more expressive gunome is associated with Shinto smiths.

Choji (clove flower): Named for the shape of a clove flower blossom, choji hamon shows rounded, balloon-like projections rising from the base pattern. A signature of the Ko-Bizen and later Ichimonji schools. Technically demanding to achieve consistently — the rounded tops require specific clay application and quench technique.

Togari (pointed): Sharp, angular points contrasting with the rounded forms of choji. Associated with specific regional traditions and individual smiths.

Hitatsura (full tempering): Temper extending so high toward the spine that isolated temper patches appear in the ji (flat of the blade). A signature of the Soshu tradition, particularly Go Yoshihiro. Technically risky — extending the temper too high increases brittleness — but visually extraordinary.

Reading Activity Within the Hamon

Beyond the gross pattern, trained connoisseurs read the activity within the hamon itself: the texture of the nie (bright martensite crystals) and nioi (fine martensite cloud), the presence of specific activity marks such as kinsuji (bright lines), sunagashi (streaming sand-like particles), and inazuma (lightning bolt-shaped bright lines). These features reflect micro-variations in steel composition and cooling history and are used in kantei (connoisseurship exercises) to attribute blades to specific schools, periods, and smiths.

Modern Hamon

Modern production swords may have either genuine differentially hardened hamon (clay tempered, T10 or similar steel) or acid-etched simulated hamon. The distinction is important: a genuine hamon reflects real metallurgical differential hardening. An acid-etched line is cosmetic only. On genuine hamon, the activity within the temper line is visible under magnification; on fake hamon, the line is a surface chemical mark with no depth or internal structure.
