Product Description
We get alot of questions here at Swords of The East. One of the most asked is "What is the BEST katana you have?" Well, we usually have a hard time answering that question, but it has been answered for us. This new Paul Chen sword, The Tori Xl Katana, is without a doubt one of the finest Japanese swords to ever grace our site. It all starts with a masterfully hand crafted blade which is folded out of ASSAB K120 C Swedish steel. The polish is done so as to bring out the best hada (grain pattern) your eyes will ever see. The blade is formed with the new geometry of the XL series so cutting is a breeze. The beauty doesn't stop with the blade. The scabbard is a "fingerprintless" brown lacquer with genuine buffalo horn accents and a "clam shell" holding portion. Iron tsuba with crane design and a handle wrapped in gorgeous brown suede with black same (rayskin) underneath. A simply incredible example of traditional swordmaking.

The Best Hanwei Makes

I have owned a few different Tori models from Hanwei, except the XL Light, and my personal favorite is the Elite. It really doesnt matter what blade geometry you choose, they are all top notch. The fittings and design on the Tori is what makes this Katana the best in their lineup. The Tsuba, Menuki, and Fuchi Kashira are the best you will find in a production Katana. I put the Tori in the same category as the Begui Swords Hanwei makes, they are that nice. Ots all personal prefence, but I love the finish on the Saya, the rattan wrapping, the colors flow together perfectly, its just about the perfect production Katana IMO. You will still find the typical shortcomings of a Hanwei Katana, stuff like Axe handle shaped tsuka, possibly saya rattle, which usually wears some of the etching off the blade, but these are typical for Hanwei. I wish they took the time to fit the saya better, that is a minor gripe most people will never notice unless they are a Practitioner or Iaido, however there are a few comoanies like Skyjiro and Huawei that do a better job on the saya fit. Other than that Hanwei is hands down the best at casting and designing fittings. I dont know of a production company that comes close, which is probably why so many places copy their work, but they are never as good. These arent "go to battle" Katana, they are designed to do 1 thing, cut Tatami mats. Not hard targets, water bottles, and bamboo. I damaged the edge of a Tori Elite by hitting the wooden dowel holding my Tatami, it didnt chip or render the Katana useless, but it rolled about 3/8 of an inch on the edge. I still love the Tori, I am purchasing yet another, I might cut some look noodles with it, bit nothing that will scratch or possibly damage the blade. SOTE has been excellent I cannot recomend them enough, great prices and service

Unless you are a millionaire and can afford a sword forged from a meteor, this is the baddest sword anyone can own. It can take incredible damage, even on a battlefield and still be ready for combat for a lifetime by simply resharpening it. An ancient Samurai warrior would be proud of this Katana.
