Praying Mantis Samurai Sword
L6/Bainite Shobu Zukuri Blade
The praying mantis has deep symbolic meaning in Japanese culture. The mantis is at the top of the insect food chain and it a very strong predator. It attacks its victims and kills them before they are aware of its presence.
We just did a big price reduction on this fantastic katana. It is truly one of the finest samurai swords that Paul Chen Cas Hanwei produces. Not only is it a beautiful sword, but it is a serious weapon
with extremely durable L6 Bainite steel. This will really stand out in any collection.
SH2359 -- Praying Mantis Katana Samurai Sword
The Praying Mantis is a symbol of cunning and power in Japanese culture and is consequently a highly respected theme in Samurai swords. Built on our new L6/Bainite blade (detailed below) in the Shobu Zukuri style with Bo-Hi, and featuring superb koshirae, the Praying Mantis is a very desirable and functional piece.
The subdued green silk ito and deep brown of the lacquered saya provide handsome contrast to the dark copper and golden accents of the tsuba, fuchi and kashira. The stalking mantis lies in wait for his next prey, mirroring the power and grace in this exceptional katana.
Bainite is a structure of high-carbon steel that combines great strength with excellent flexibility and shock absorption characteristics. It has been known as an exemplary Katana blade component for a number of years but its use has been restricted to a few top-class master smiths, due to the difficulties involved in performing the exacting heat treatment procedures necessary for the production of a Bainite blade body in combination with the very hard Martensite Yakiba (edge section) required for Katana blades.
Hanwei has now mastered this difficult process, using billets of L-6 tool steel (a very tough high-carbon low-alloy steel) as a starting point. Blades are forged and shaped in the normal way, then carefully heat treated to achieve the required Bainite and Martensite structures before final polishing.

Just received my Praying Mantis Hanwei from SOTE. The color and sharpness of the blade is like nothing I have seen before. You can split hairs with this edge. Solid as granite. Fitting is perfect and impeccably constructed. Shipped in two days from Mr. Cook as requested.
I will not be foolish enough to hack bamboo with a $1600 sword but I would be willing to place this L6 Bainite steel against any piece of metal out there. Came with heavy coating of protective oil which I cleaned off and replaced with break free gun lubricant after cleaning and lubricating with semi auto bore cleaner.
This is a magnificent katana issued by Hanwei with medium weight and size. Full tang and well crafted wrapping. My sword distributor of choice is SOTE.
